Over the past couple of months I had two different Fordbarn members stop by my shop and ironically the same topic came up regarding people enlarging other people's pictures that they uploaded to that thread. I guess my (-or our) question is 'Why' is this 'service' needed?
With technology of iPhones and smart devices, -and with WiFi speeds as fast as they are these days, clicking to load a thumbnailed picture(s) is almost instant and can quickly zoomed in on to look at a certain detail if that is your desire. I realize I am likely ignorant of the obvious reason(s) for them doing this, (-and I sure don't want to hurt anyone's feelings), but I have been a member of Fordbarn since Gus Stangeland started it, then when Shelley & Pete had it, and since Ryan purchased it some 15+ years ago ...and for all those years we seemingly did just fine without this 'service'. So again, what am I missing?? ![]() ![]() So you may ask why does it matter, ...and that would be a fair question? I cannot speak for the other two gentlemen but for me, where I find it most annoying is that I often frequent Fordbarn when I am doing redundant tasks (-on hold during a telephone conversation, monitoring a lathe or machine shop operation, or waiting on a Dr. appointment, etc.) and just want to catch up. Now, with these enlarged pictures it has just about ruined my ability to quickly check on new and/or updated posts with my phone because my browser automatically adjusts the size of the entire thread due to these enlarged picture(s). So now this makes the text so small that the entire thread must be enlarged by pinching & expanding with two hands now (-as opposed to scrolling with my thumb only) which makes scrolling thru the thread too difficult to do quickly. I realize I can block the people that are resizing other people's pictures, but that seems kind of harsh, ...especially if their resizing actually serves a useful purpose to everyone else. Thoughts? |

I agree. I find the redundant information repetitive and annoying. I am perfectly capable of "clicking" on any image I want to enlarge.

I don’t agree at all. The op answered his own question, he and anyone else who doesn’t appreciate the service can easily block the sources. My own experience is that the thumbnails enlarge to a low resolution, not good enough to see details.

I think the more relevant question is why can't we just post regular size pictures into the thread like every other site.

Alan, I think you may have just answered my question. Maybe it's because some people don't know how this forum actually works?? ![]() You are correct that if someone clicks on the thumbnail photo one time, it does open it in a low resolution. That is by design to allow the image to load fast. If someone immediately double-clicks on the same picture, then it immediately opens in the same exact resolution & size as when someone reposts it. So in reality, there is not an actual benefit to re-post pictures, -and while for some folks it may not bother them whether it is done or not, it does severely handicap others of us that are using our smart phones to read the Forum. Because there really is not a need for that. No sense slowing down to load hi-res photos each time you visit a thread. |

I appreciate the work they do imbedding the enlarged or actual size pictures in the post. It's a minor inconvenience to click on the photo to enlarge, and have it show up in a new window, but it's an inconvenience. If I knew how to embed the photos in a post like they do, I'd do it to my own posts.
I'm not sure why their posting of the photo in the actual thread is an issue worth discussing, but since you asked; I hope they continue to do this!!! A better discussion is why some people post links to mostly videos hosted on other webpages, and they don't post any description of the relevance to the offsite link! |

I appreciate very much Pete Hoovie enlarging my photos and anyone elses photos because it greatly improves the quality and detail of the photos and makes viewing easier and more enjoyable. If you don't like Pete's enlarging photos, just keep scrolling on down and ignore them.
SO, PETE, Keep doing what you're doing. |

Brent, you're right about one thing, many of us are old dogs incapable of learning new tricks. Simple instructions like a double click just go in one ear and out the other, and I count myself as one of those old dogs.
Ryan has a website here that suits us old dogs so well, we find ourselves perusing it on multiple devices day and night. Yes, my cel phone is a PITA on any website, not just the FordBarn, but ya gotta do something while waiting for hours in the Dr's office (These days, that's my biggest complaint)! I'm sure that Ryan has a dedicated file for all the great suggestions he has accumulated on how to improve his website, which he'd no doubt forward to anyone interested.

I agrere with the original poster. And I have mentioned it before. It is redundant to repost the pictures when all some one has to do is click on the picture. I am surprised that Ryan hasn't said something as it must really use up bandwidth. Are we getting too lazy to click on the thumbnail ?

For me, I view on a desk top computer. I can double click all day & the picture stays the same size as if I click once.

- The only thing I will say is that I was really surprised when that happened to one of my pictures. I am a long time moderator on another forum and once in a while a picture will show up that is pretty small. I always ask the OP if he wants me to make his picture bigger and re-post it. The answer is always yes, but I wouldn't even think about doing it without asking. The only difference is that I do it by editing the OP's original Post.... Just My 2¢ worth. . Brent, since you have an iPhone, consider using the Tapatalk app to read FordBarn. It helps with this problem by formatting all images to automatically be the width of your screen.
I never use the browser anymore unless I’m trying to find someone’s hometown or something. The fee is something like $6/yr. And you can post images in higher-res than the browser upload permits. |
