Jim, Now I've seen Everything. With a few yards of clothesline and a couple of pulleys you could connect this thing to the steering wheel (or tiller) and then you woulda had the precursor to today's holy grail, the 'self driving vehicle'.

That is quite a gadget, considering the poor maps of the day it must have been quite an undertaking to program the thing.
