I met this guy at the Gold King Mine in Jerome AZ in 1992. I just came across the video and was marveling at the whole thing, but then I saw what he hauls to the truck shows and decided it was worthy of sharing with the Fordbarn community.

That's my kinda' guy! I've been to Jerome several times, it's a neat place
I used to spend winters in Prescott, Az. meet several people that had big trucks and amazing collections of vintage mining equipment. Tom Last edited by hotcoupe; 02-03-2026 at 11:01 AM. Reason: Spelling |

That is impressive! Love the sound of that Cummins 6. I think i've seen this video before. Maybe from one of GB's previous posts. Thanks Gary, your posts are always interesting.

Al, It wasn't me. Just found this an hour ago. Looks like this video was made in the 90's or so. I'm not good at faces, but I think this is Don King who owns the Gold King Mine. I had seen his name in Gas Engine Magazine (one lunger mag) and called him about visiting the following month. So up, up, up the mountain we crawl in the six cylinder landcruiser wagon (the foyota today), towing a 500.00 16' travel trailer with 3 kids in the back seat and a month's worth of gear. We might have pulled second gear once or twice, but couldn't sustain it. He invited us to stay over but there were a lot of interesting characters about, and no ammenities and the missus had seen enough by then.

78 forward gears is a big selection…..some people today are only licensed to drive automatics …. run a tank of fuel through that thing with the pipes uncorked and you might be deaf !!… I was in Jerome in 1981 for a few weeks…. I was a “motorcycle only” guy back then…. That’s definitely a nice rig for haulin’ a few antique trucks…….Mark

I went to the Gold King Mine website... Guy's name isn't Don King, It's Don Robertson. Don King was a fight promoter.
Don Robertson is a guy who has good taste in cool ol' stuff.

hey Sisson, "Nice pair of 36's" eh?" **smirk**
reminds of the infamous line Dick Cavett used to introduce the buxom 1950's starlet Jane Mansfield, '...Here they are, Jane Mansfield". Last edited by hueyhoolihan; 02-04-2026 at 03:37 PM. |

When I had my Fire engines (a '48 Seagrave open cab pumper with a Pierce-Arrow derived V12 and a '73 Ford F900 based Seagrave pumper) I almost got immersed in big trucks. Luckily, I sold them in time.

Neat video - thanks for sharing! That's quite an impressive carrying capacity.
I have a three speed auxiliary transmission that eventually will go in my 1935 1 1/2 truck to give me 12 speeds forward but I'll likely keep it in HI range so my truck can keep up with traffic a bit better, especially with no load.

GB I have an uncle who is my late mom's youngest brother, who will be 101 this month. He is a retired trucker who drove for many years. I'm gonna forward this to his son, who looks after Uncle Leroy, even tho he is still driving. Only a little (no semis, tho) and trying to finish up a '57 GMC pickup restoration. The truck needs wiring, which should get it going. It's a little unusual, having the 267 c.i. Pontiac with the hydromatic trans. which are original. He has an amazing bunch of cars and trucks, including a fairly complete '47 Dodge semi tractor, collected over his lifetime.
