The latest trend over the last decade is ABS plastic. I'm an old time auto trimmer and in my day "waterproof" panel board was the norm. If you have an upholstery supply house check there or an auto upholstery shop.

I cover the backside of door panels with plastic made from a black contractor's garbage bag. I tack the plastic to the panels using rubber cement. I also put dust seals on of the doors in my Model A's, and I paint the inside bottoms of the doors with POR-15. These slides show what I do to upholstery panels.

I use waterproof cardboard purchased from an upholstery wholesaler, and like Bob, I glue black plastic trash bags to the backs of them.
