1933 dash instruments

I am looking to have my gas gauge in the dash refinished. The speedometer and amp gauge are fine, but the red dye seems to have faded the gas gauge. My hope is that I don't have to redo all three gauges. Thanks

Assuming it is functional, just pour out the old and add new. There is a screw top with the hose that goes to the tank on the reservoir on the back side of the gauge. There will be small metal rods in there too; do not remove they are for calibration. Lots of threads on this, search "hydrostatic" and they will come up.

I think that the original question pertained to the appearance of the gauge faces and it is a good question. The face for the combined fuel/temperature gauge was reproduced some years ago, but I don't recall a reproduction for the fuel gauge face or someone offering to refinish them.

I had Williamson's Instruments restore my 33 dualtemp face. They did a great job.

Just look for another used fuel gauge that has a nicer face than yours. They are not hard to find on ebay or swap meets. If you have your gauge restored then there is a fair chance it will not match your speedo and ammeter faces. Regards, Kevin.

Here is my NOS fuel gauge, the face is not what I would call "silver" or "Silver Nickle" in color.....more of "Champagne" color or in more simple terms, more "gold" in color. The last picture is the fuel gauge along with my NOS Amp gauge ALSO the same tint face color, maybe even slightly "gold-er".

When I had my fuel gauge out of my 34 I did a little cleaning test as it looked dirty, uneven and mottled. At least in my gauge's case, the golden color is because there is a natural resin lacquer on the gauge face that has yellowed with age. It fluoresces a deep green in UV and is soluble in a few different organic solutions. The black markings are under the discolored clear and soluble if you choose a highly polar solution but stable in a weak solution meaning they are probably oil based inks. To me this means that they were shiny silver appearing when new and only look golden/champagne because of the discoloration of the lacquer coatings with age. Thicker coatings thus look more gold, unevenly thick look mottled (like mine) thinner coated ones more silver. I just surface aqueous cleaned mine for dirt and grime and left the lacquer alone as all three match well and I like the warm look of age on them.
