Default Windshield Glass

Do any vendors sell ready-to-install windshield glass, or is this a custom job for a local shop? Has anyone done one recently?. I am wondering what I should expect to pay. It's a '29 Phaeton.

You can also take out your existing glass, bring it to the local glass shop, and they will cut it exactly like the old windshield. I have done this many times.

This is cheaper than having it shipped and faster.

I use a local glass guy.A windshields cost me $100.cash and carry.$150.installed in the frame using his way of bedding, glass cost plus his hourly rate using anything you might bring him.He did tell me that my next one will probably be $135.cash and carry, due to tarriffs. He said to check in the day I want it done.

I used Sanders Reproduction Glass online. They have the ability to add the correct Ford logo to the glass in the right place. I had them use their existing glass pattern and the glass fit nicely in my windshield frame. Cost $180 shipped to Massachusetts.

I use Auto City Classic in Isanti Mn. great people to deal with. Edges of the glass are always polished to a fine finish.

My local commercial glass shop did it for me last year for $200 cash. Did a perfect job within a week

You do have to look around some.In the seacoast area of N.H.there are some shops that are pricey.Automotive glass is a miniscule part of their business, and they really don't want to touch it.Now there seems to be glass places, and windshield places. They don't do each others work.NONE of them want to touch installing door and quarter glass in old cars anymore. My friend just cut a piece of glass for my mothers 37 Plymouth windshield, the tarrif fee was $22.He said right now that's all over the map though. He said he seems to get hit randomly with those extra charges.

Ditto on seacoast area glass pricing.

The last windshield I put in 40 years ago was about $72 for the glass and install/tape/black silicone myself. The guy at the shop was nice "when are you going to do the side windows? Leave the car here and we'll do them up right for you."

Inquiries recently to repeat the delivery of a plate glass cut to the dimensions in the Service Bulletin page was over $250.

"Well, one can buy a glass for about $189 delivered on Ebay."

"Well (sarcastic) why don't you do that?"

Not so nice now. New management.

Nothing lasts long in Cow Hampshire.

You can find glass online for about $120 - but shipping will bring it up to about $189 so Ebay is probably the best bet overall. Auto City Classic.

I measured it to conformance with the Service Bulletin pix and it was right on.

I bought windshield glass from a vendor who claimed I could order by year and body style - no pattern needed. They sent me the wrong thing initially, then later replaced it with what I needed based on a pattern I supplied, but apparently they don't want the first one back. It's 43 5/8" wide at the top, 12 5/16" along the sides, and 10 1/2" in the middle. I have no clue what Model A it fits. I just I know it isn't right for a 1929 Phaeton. See the add I have posted under For Sale if you think you can use it.

Supporting local businesses makes good sense.

Around here in the Knoxville Tennessee area most of the shops do not want to have anything to do with antique car windows or replacement mirrors either. The old time owner of a local glass shop sold out and the new ones deal with house door and window replacements and home mirrors. I was surprised at the cost of a replacement for a recent Ford Escape windshield replacement.

In the late 90's a local glass company sold out to a national chain.I stopped in after the new regime took over, pretty much the same thing, all the workers stayed, and the price of an A windshield stayed the same.Only difference was the office help. The girl did tell me there would be a $30.patterning charge for each piece.I already had wood patterns for all the glass in 30-31 A Coupes,Tudors, and pickups.I had rescued them from an A guy that died in the 70's.I handed them the windshield pattern, and the girl said this will save us some work.I went back the next day to pick up the glass, and put my pattern and piece of glass in the truck. She handed me the bill, and it had a $30.patterning charge on it.I pointed it out to her,and said,I think you made a mistake, you didn't pattern anything,I did it.She said,no,all custom auto glass gets a patterning charge, you have to pay it.The office manager came out,and he said the same thing. He wasn't happy about it,(he was really on my side).I brought the windshield back in,and leaned it on the showroom wall.It was wrapped in cardboard, and I wrote Model A Ford on it.I left it for them.A friend went to them with the glass for his Rockne.8 pieces, perfect patterns.I had warned him,and he did figure on paying the patterning charge, but not on every piece.Four of those pieces of glass were identical,so they wanted to charge him 4 times. He didn't have it done there either.

Hello, I had glass cut in the past at local shops , however that seems to be a thing of the past, most places are run by younger people so would rather work with newer cars , radiator shops also, hard to find one that will clean and repair. Also regarding tariffs , USA doesn’t make auto glass anymore?
