I started working on my tutor project again. Kids are gone and now have some time.
Its a 1930/31 project car and I assumed that the frame and Body were from a tudor. The number on this engine was A4652868-May of 1931. Frame number is not recognizable. So no idea if they matched. I will call this OLD FRAME. I noticed I needed a better frame so I bought a frame and engine. Frame number is A3088879-March 1930. I will call this FINAL FRAME. I’ve started to test fit the wood blocks temporarily to the tudor body and OLD FRAME, and I’ve noticed the tudor body holes do not lineup with the holes in the OLD FRAME. So I started to wonder what was going on. While comparing the two frames, I noticed that they are different. They are both definitely Model A frames. The difference is in the location of the bracket that mounts the body in the front A pillar. If I check those measurements, they are different between the two frames. If you look at my pictures you can see that the FINAL FRAME(first pict) has a dimension from the center of the front axle to the a pillar mount bracket of 40 1/2". The OLD FRAME (second pict) has a dimension of 43 1/8" from the center of the front axle to the a pillar mount bracket. There is a 3" difference- truck vs car? The question I have is, what vehicle is the FINAL FRAME from? I have been searching the internet for hours and all i come up with is that the frames are the same except for slight differences in holes and brackets. Ford changed the placement of that bracket in 31. I’m not sure of month but someone here will likely get it to the month! It was to accommodate the slant body cars. Many non slants were placed on those frames and only one body bolt when thru the wooden block.
I’ve seen a few originals that way….but not many |

In September 1930 the body bracket on the frame was moved 2-3/8" to the rear for some models (Standard Fordor, Town Sedan and Victoria Coupe).

I was able to find the document on the frame changes last night. I see the note about the 2 3/8" change. I guess i will be moving this bracket. thanks for the help guys

The change was made to accommodate the new cowls of the slant winshield cars that started first with the Victoria and then Fordor models came later. The 68C Cabriolet had a wood body sub-frame so it likely used the older type frame. The Tudor sedan was unchanged. For the most part, the model A frames are close enough that they can be altered to fit any year or model. Holes can be welded up & redrilled as needed. The only caveat is that the frame is the last resort for title and registration purposes due to engine changes and the like. Changing it could be problematic. Rusty frames can obscure the original numbers of a frame but some forensic type procedures can bring them back up for verification.
