Default Chrome Plating

Does anyone have any advice on chrome platers? I have seen some old threads but haven't found anything that is current. Advanced Plating seems to have a good reputation, but they are more expensive than others and have a long turnaround time. I will appreciate advice from someone with recent experience.

Hmmm, the last time I used Sherm's they delivered before the promised date and less than quoted price. I was very happy with their work and plan to send them more.

I have had friends use Advanced and their work is very, very nice. Here is a 32 steering box that I rebuilt that was plated by Advanced

I had inquired not long ago about redoing a 34 grill which still has mostly original finish and only needed work on a couple bars at the bottom. Was quoted a price about $3500.00 for starters unless it needed more work ! Agree, that plater does outstanding work but too pricy for this guy. Looks good on the wall like it is now.

Where are you? There are two chrome platers in and around St. Louis and one… Family Finishing… can do small stuff and has 1990’s pricing. If the part is nice to begin with, the quality is very good and the pricing is great. But they only do small stuff. They plated a deck lid key cover for $20 and a few small (nice to start with) potmetal pieces for $30-60 each. I had bumpers for a ‘46 Mercury done at $750 each at Highline Plating in Cuba, MO and the quality was essentially flawless. Rear was nice to start with, and front was dented and had a few twists and it came out flawless. None were heavily pitted, so they didn’t have to do a lot of grinding. Bumper guards also came out great after some welding and straightening. I was quoted $1150 each at other places. I’d recommend either. I’ve toured both places, and they are not state of the art, but they do care about quality.

too AVOID nickel flash [yellow], 33/34 car grills need a special copper anode to distribute the DC current properly. Special tooling then. One such anode in Oregon has been lost to time. Newc

Go to the H.A.M.B. and do a search on "spray on chrome". You will get enough reading material for a month. Bottom line is that looks good for a while but doesn't last.

I had numerous pieces plated at Sherm’s in Sacramento. Excellent quality and service! They offer 3 grades, Street, Polish and Show. I used both the Street and Polish grade and was very pleased. Shown are the ‘28 folding windshield stanchions I had done in Polish grade. Paul J

As someone already asked, where are you located?

Thanks for the feedback. I’ll check out Sherm’s and the options mentioned by Bruce. I’m in Richmond, Virginia. I haven’t found any options near here.

I know of several folks who have used Wayne's Plating and have been pleased. It is also close to you there in Richmond.

I have not used them though so I cannot speak from my own experience.

I've used Wayne's Plating several times and have been very satisfied. The parts came out looking great and the price didn't break the bank. I'm in Northern Virginia and it's worth it to me to drive 90 minutes to the shop on Rt. 3 for delivery and pickup.
