Here’s another way to solve his rear end dilemma, keep his original brakes (would have to change backing plates), while keeping his spring setup original. This allows for an open driveshaft and any transmission he would choose as long as the driveshaft is made with the correct U joints. I have sent John pictures, but thought others may like to see another option.
