Although I suspect that it may have originally been fixed with upholstery cloth, How is the long decorative stainless strip fixed (in between windshield garnish mold & dashboard) in my '48 Merc 114X Coupe?

On my 48 ford it is fixed to a welting similar to fender welting & sandwich under window frames at least on a open car.

I just did the dash on my ‘46 Merc and the stainless did indeed have a strip of welt attached to it. All of the welt had crumbled off, and I chose to not attempt to attach something. I simply stuffed the lip of the stainless under the garnish moldings to hold it in place. It worked fine, and only required a bit of finessing in one corner, where the stainless tried to stick out about an eighth of an inch. With careful fitting of the garnishes, I got the stainless to stay in place. I will say that perhaps the hardest task I’ve ever faced in restoring old Fords was getting the windshield garnishes to go back in. Took me a week of multiple attempts and walking away out of frustration. I think the new Dennis Carpenter windshield rubber was the source of issues. I had to aggressively cut away a bunch of it where it fit over the body flange, to get the moldings to fit. Good luck
