Got this far reading about john's project and him making a new package tray. I just finished working on mine ('41 Merc) and the wood is plywood with foam under the vinyl. I am sure this is original.

My shelf of course is shorter than John's. I am certain the plywood, foam under the vinyl and the vinyl are all original. The staples are slightly rusty and there were only one set of holes where they were stapled. I had to remove all the staples and lift up the vinyl because two of the nutserts turned and bunched up the foam. I removed the shelf in the first place to brad nail a split in the wood. One thing leads to another, right?

Tom, I just bought a 1944 parts book, which I think was a good investment. Some of the part numbers changed from then until the "Green Bible" was issued in 1950. It also covers Mercury. Very time-consuming process making the package tray. On the 42 as I recall the vinyl came over the portion closest to the seat. I elected to leave the wood uncovered there. Thought it looked better and a conversation starter that wood was still being used. I was surprised by a number of comments at the Auburn Early V8 meet that the 42 should be in the "Rouge" class. It doesn't meet the criteria unfortunately which I was aware of. BTW I also have a 1949 8N tractor. Mine is stock but if I saw a Funk conversion one, I might own another one!

I had the 8N sitting in the showroom for 5 years or so. Little kids loved it and young girls. Maybe if I had a tractor in high school, I would've had more success dating. F.I.L. restored it when he was 80 years old. Was an ugly baby when he started. Most things I have come with a story. The person who took the picture was a friend of ours who was battling cancer at 50 years old. She always greeted me with "How's it going brat?" and would bring me cookies. Wendy lost her battle, but I think of her every time I look at that picture.

Yes. the vinyl laps over the seat with small cutouts so as not to interfere with hanging the back of the rear seat on the "hooks". I have several parts books including the green one, and glad to have them! Great reference.

My 8NV8 does not look like a Funk, I built it to look more in the vision of what one would look like if Ford had built one. It is more refined than a Funk. I will do a bit of a writeup on it at some point if I can locate a decent pic or two.

NOS but shelf worn gas door came for the 42 today. The original one has a stress crack in it, so I think we'll R&R. The patina is about right. We've had single digit weather so we're a couple of months from getting the old cars back out.

He cruised up to the shop today in the nice 48.








Great to see it out in the sunshine! John spent most of the afternoon helping me improve the tail lights on my 65 Comet.

Its been a while! Keeping busy all summer. John wanted to change oil in his 42 and also replace the rubber ball on the rear of the wishbone.
We built some VERY crude tooling to install the rubber ball after John dropped the back of the wishbone. Clamped a couple pieces of steel above and below the frame "x" near the ball socket. This was to provide a "lip" to set the plywood against, to allow us to pry on the plywood. Cut a hole in a chunk of scrap plywood, then drilled another hole because it was in the wrong place. We used that lower hole to stick a rusty old crow bar in as a pry bar to push the plywood very firmly against the new rubber ball. ( Note the prior ball was a NOS and split when we tried to install it. Can't remember how we did that?) Then John applied 90 psi air to the hole in the rubber ball through the 1.25 dia access hole in the plywood. Seemed to work good. Oh yeah we put Dawn soap on the inside of the ball and also the knob on the wishbone.

I found an easy way to install the rubber ball on my 34 last week.
I tried all the usual tricks but still couldn’t get it on,
Finally , I cut two triangle shapes from .010 brass shim stock,the large end of the triangles was folded around the ball on the radius rod, the long end of the triangle ,about 2inches to the point was feed into the hole in the rubber ball,with a small smear of rubber grease on it.
Then I just pushed the ball up on the shim and it just fed itself onto the Ball leaving the shims behind, I couldn’t believe how easy it was, I had been at it for an hr before.

Went for a test run yesterday and the car tracked really nice at 60 M.P.H. on a road that isn't terribly smooth. The new radius ball and the NOS shocks I'm sure helped.

Ford folks,
John had a small project on his 42 Ford "Cindy". He brought it up to the shop to look at the hood hinge or hood fit. The right side was sticking out and up at the back of the hood to cowl fit, and was high at the right side of the cowl also.
He moved the hinge a little. Friend Bill and his wife stopped in as John was into the hinge movement process. I got a call and was not able to help as they solved this fit issue. I was very surprised, but they did it. Seems with several of the hinge bolts loose Bill pushed up very firmly on the front of the hood and John tightened the bolts. This for some reason allowed the hood to fit Much Much better! John was happy! I was impressed!


Sorry I did not get any before pictures. But the hood stuck out maybe a 1/2 inch and up about a 1/4 inch.

The second NOS headlight bucket arrived today. The old ones are crustier than I would like. One was from NC and the other from Vermont. I should have written down where the parts all came from. It would've been a good geography lesson for the grand kids.

John, Now you can cross those buckets off your list. They are in beautiful shape. It is so great to see folks like you are willing to search the 'net to find real genuine Ford parts that heve been preserved for 80 or more years!
