Default ford 4cylinder industrial engine

I am looking for someone to help me gather information on a toro tractor. it has a 4cyl engine, it is a flathead block with the distributor on the front of the engine. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Probably from a Ford N series tractor or 1941-42 pickup.

That red engine looks like a Jr version of the more common 6 cyl G. It's very cool. A friend gave me a project Toro about 15 years ago. It had a 4 cyl hercules but the trans looked like a T-9 and it had a ford tonner truck rear. I had to do major work to the cast aluminum grille. Does yours have a dump bed? Mine would go way too fast for a tractor. I too, would love to see some pictures.

I too have always liked those Toros. I have found a few in the wild, but never brought one home yet

It's from a Ford tractor, here is one from my proto-type 1941 Ford GP jeep which is a slight variation of the early 9N, 2N series tractor. Yours "might" be from an 8N or later as the water pump location relative to the head is different from mine AS well as the block looks different at the edge where the intake manifold ends, more squared off than rounded!!

There "might"/"Should" be a serial number stamped on the left side of the block, center, right below where the head meets the block? You might be able to tell more with that number and a couple of the Ford Tractor supply houses like Yesterday;'s or Steiner's maybe???

what was the voltage system on a 1948 toro tractor? 6 or 12 volts positive or negative ground?

Cannot speak to “Toro” but 48 Ford’s were 6V positive ground.

If you look close at the old probably no good battery cables, the big hole on the battery end will be positive, small hole negative, where do the wires connect to on the other end?

Try this site don’t be afraid of the front mount distributor, I removed mine and put new points and condenser in mine.

Sadly I sold my 8n a few years back.

NO, the oil pump in the early tractor 4's was made to bolt onto the front main crank cap. On the later motors I "believe" was moved more to the middle of the crank and bolts to the block??? not as familiar with the later 4's like you have!!! BUT no issues with the "big" oil plug other than a very fast drain of the oil!!! Make sure you have a good drain screen that fits inside that opening.
