I believe the clamp is supposed to fit around the ferrule that you can see further towards the end of the cable. I found some steel clamps that I could modify (grinding the clearance) to fit perfectly around the ferrule and fit in the recessed area around the shifter housing bolt (the one that you are currently using in your photo). I fussed around with my grinder and the dremel to cut the sides of the clamp down and it took a good half hour finessing to get it to fit perfectly but it worked.
