My father and grandfather ran scrap drives for the government in Minneapolis for the war effort - my father then 19 years old and he and my grandfather hand sorted and moved the material from this collection site for the war effort- while doing this my father also worked as a replacement worker at the Del Monte canning facility about 80 miles from home. He would work straight as many hours as he could in a row to accumulate 45 hours and then hitchhike home and work on the scrap drive with his father . I have a photo of the sign the government posted highlighting their efforts but don't know how to post it. They moved 1,051,900 lbs of scrap from this one site.
