Hi,
I am trying to remove the tire rack so I can move the splash apron to expose the VIN numbers. I have used a block of wood and a hammer. Did not move. I bought the roadster pickup back in 1968 and there was never a nut on the to secure it. My next attempt would be to mount a tire less wheel for more leverage. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks, Jim |

It’s a tapered fit. Take the nut off the bottom, turn it upside down and refit until the net is flush with the bottom of the bracket arm. Take a hammer to it to break it loose from the bottom. May take some heat, but it shouldn’t

Hold a 3 pound hammer against one side of the socket. Then, strike the opposite side of the socket with another 3 pound hammer. In other words, strike the two hammers together, with the socket between them. It's tight, but it can be done. And,don't fiddle around with a couple of 16 ounce claw hammers. You need weight behind it,for both the buck and the bucker.Don't be spleeny with it,hit it like you need to destroy it.

Consider doing a rubbing. Pencil and notebook paper. Less drama.

Hi,
I haven’t removed the spare tire rack. I was able to read the vin number with a little paint remover. Checking the numbers it was built in December 1929. Thanks for your help and advice. Jim |

The bottom of the spare tire mount has the same thread as the rear axle. You might try a "knock-off wheel puller" on it.
