Default Removing a model A spare tire mount

Hi,
I am trying to remove the tire rack so I can move the splash apron to expose the VIN numbers. I have used a block of wood and a hammer. Did not move. I bought the roadster pickup back in 1968 and there was never a nut on the to secure it. My next attempt would be to mount a tire less wheel for more leverage. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Jim

It’s a tapered fit. Take the nut off the bottom, turn it upside down and refit until the net is flush with the bottom of the bracket arm. Take a hammer to it to break it loose from the bottom. May take some heat, but it shouldn’t

Hold a 3 pound hammer against one side of the socket. Then, strike the opposite side of the socket with another 3 pound hammer. In other words, strike the two hammers together, with the socket between them. It's tight, but it can be done. And,don't fiddle around with a couple of 16 ounce claw hammers. You need weight behind it,for both the buck and the bucker.Don't be spleeny with it,hit it like you need to destroy it.

Consider doing a rubbing. Pencil and notebook paper. Less drama.

Best of luck finding your serial number under there. That’s a lot of work to get at it. I am doing a frame off on my late ‘29 Phaeton and had no serial number stampings at all. It was probably an off day or they were worried about the stock market crash.

Hi,
I haven’t removed the spare tire rack. I was able to read the vin number with a little paint remover. Checking the numbers it was built in December 1929. Thanks for your help and advice.

The bottom of the spare tire mount has the same thread as the rear axle. You might try a "knock-off wheel puller" on it.
