[QUOTE=David in San Antonio;2305241]
The other type, manufactured by LogoLite and available from the usual distributors, is a complete, self-contained optical system.[QUOTE] If they don't use the reflector, what holds then in place?

Katy and Y-blockhead, by saying the Logolite self-contained LED system does not use the reflector, I mean the reflector is not employed in the optical system. The Logolite plugs into the stock receptacle just like the stock incandescent bulb. All the stock components stay exactly where they were to begin with- except the incandescent bulb which the Logolite replaces. And now thinking about it, I realize the Logolite sends its light beam through the Ford headlight lens, so it’s true that one part of the original optical system is still utilized.

The BLC 682 headlights were a replacement style used on many A’s that were WWII and depression survivors. They used sealed bean lights. They are my favorite as that was what I most commonly saw growing up in the 1950’s. That is what I have on my cabriolet. My grandmother drove it through the depression and WWII.

Y-Blockhead- Sorry, I must have misunderstood the question mark. Texting can obscure meaning.
For that matter, regular writing can be easily misinterpreted, too. I heard that J. Edgar Hoover replied to a memo, writing “Watch the borders.” But while his report believed he was to surveille the entry points from Canada and Mexico, Hoover was actually warning him to use the proper margins on his typed reports.

Back to basics. The reflector gathers up the light from a light bulb (which sends light out in all directions) and directs that light straight forward. As said, how well that works depends a lot on the quality of the reflector, the use of silver or chrome etc. and the parabolic shape. That light is then redirected to the road by the lens.
LED's by their nature send light straight out, so there is really no need for a reflector. That is what the "focused" LED's are doing. Previous LED's were directing light to the reflector, which was never designed for LED's sending light straight out. |
