Default Tires

Good morning all,

My wife is inheriting a 31 Model A from her grandfather who passed away recently. The car has been sitting in a garage in Florida for the last 20-ish years. I need to trailer it to Texas so we can begin working on it; so step one is to get it rolling to get it on a trailer.

As you can imagine, the tires are shot, but I need it to roll to get it onto the trailer. I figure it will be several years before we actually drive it; so I'm looking for the absolute cheapest option for tires.

Can I mount tractor tires on the rims if I don't plan to drive it on them?

The tires are 6.00-16.

Ask around at your local club for "rollers" which are bald tires and usually free. You can also ask at places that sell used tires but the 6.00-16 tires may be hard to find. You may be able to get the tires that are on the car to hold air enough to get it on a trailer and then deal with the tires when you get it home. It will likely be on jack stands for a while with the wheels off the car while you work on things like the brakes. You can also try an ad in the local Craigslist.org.

Good luck with the car. Is this your first Model A? There have been lots of posting here on the Barn about how to bring an old friend back to life, but you can ask again and many people will provide some valuable help.

The tractor tires will be OK for rollers but may be hard to mount on the wheels.

When you get enough posting to allow it, post some photos.

If you just want a cheap tire, look into implement tires. The three rib tires for tractors would look funky on there and implement tires are about the same price but have more ribs so they aren't as obvious.

6 X 16 are pretty wide for a Model A. You will likely be looking for some 19" model A wheels at some point.

I run my 1956 Ford 850 tractor front tires tubeless but I have to use the tire sealant to keep them holding air. If the car has old Ford steely type wheels, they can leak at a rivet now and then but will generally hold air without a tube for a while anyway.

I don’t know what you have for a trailer, but you might go to Harbor Freight and buy a 3,500 lb ATV winch and winch it on the trailer. Get as close to the car as possible, so it’s a short distance. Then I wouldn’t worry about tires until you get home.

I agree. Roll it on the flat tires if you can, winch it up the trailer.

Makes sense to see if the tires hold air first, but I doubt they do. The tubes get pinched when the tire goes all the way flat.

Sounds like a fun project

It is my first Model A; I'm excited to get started. I will be along asking many questions and sharing many pictures as I go.

I will see if I can find rollers. That's a great idea. If y'all know anyone in South Daytona Florida with some rollers I'd appreciate hearing about it.

hit floridas Craigslist and FB

you might find a couple of your tires hold air. you can also bolt up some 19" rims that hold air. they are quite easy to find and cheap.....
match the fronts- match the backs.

Hit up a motorcycle shop. They'll have old tires they'll give you. Make good rollers for years to come.

Did you try to air up the tires. Old flat tube tires often will hold air.

I have a 6:00 x 16 to give away, but I am nowhere near you.
