Default For the Kiwis and Aussies

I had a nice drive today, out to Mt Morgan for a club meeting, About 230 miles round trip,
I went up on the main hi way, but came home via the country roads, I stopped and looked at a really nice ANZAC memorial out side this farm gate,Some folks sure know how to express their gratitude .
Also I stopped for smoko and my home made biscuits and coffee on the running board.
Ohh, the A went great.

Lawrie, I think that apart from the millions of post war immigrants, there would hardly be an Australian or Kiwi family that hasn't lost somebody.
For our American friends, even though we in Australia were so remote from the conflict in Europe, we lost more men on a per capita basis than any other country. Many, many women never married in those days because there weren't enough men. The ramifications of war are far reaching.

This is a great old map of ANZAC Cove from 1916.
The top says the landing was April 25 1915 and evacuation December.

Rupert Murdoch is having his reputation tarnished a bit lately ...

His father Keith did wonders getting all those troops out of there.

Updrasft, My grandfather was in the first lot to land at Gallipoli , In his war records its not called that ,its called the Dardanelles, he was there 35 days and got wounded and evacuated.
Makes for some sobering reading does his ww1 records.
That made me stop in the model A on Sunday and take a few moments.
And thank you Bruce for fixing my pic

The first page of that second link mentions the shortcomings of the British officers and Murdoch's letter is scathing of them. There are many stories even today of their idiocy and arrogance and how they cost so many allied lives. As an American friend of mine observes, "The Germans must be really stupid if the British beat them!".

I think it was the aristocratic tradition at the time in Britain. The time of the aristocrates was at its height in the late 1800's to the first world war. They were a cut above the rest, and they were making the decisions. There is an excellent DVD called "Secrets of The Manor House" by SBS here and I think PBS in the US.
After the second world war they were taxed at about 80% so they started marrying American women, as women in the US could inherit wealth.
