Default How is a Sport coupe seat secured?

I found a seat bottom and rear on the local classifieds, drove 2hrs and picked it up. It is better than my milk crate, has upholstery and springs! I have the wedge shaped bit secured to the floor, but how is the seat frame attached to it, and the rear secured to the car? My A has a long way to go, and is missing a lot of things.....

Is this a 1930 or later car or an earlier model?

The 1928 & 29 Sport Coupes had the basic lower cushion seat riser that is very much like a wedge. All the early coupes used this. The lower cushion assembly consists of the wood bottom frame and the lower spring box assembly. Upholstery was formed over this. There were metal channels that were attached to the wood bottom frame to keep it in place in the riser. The spriing box was attached to the top of the bottom wood frame with clips around the large wire of the box frame.

The back rest also has a wood frame with two metal clips attached on the back that allow it to slip into the wood package tray cross brace slots. The back cushion spring box is then attached to the front of the wood frame.

The seat cushions are held in by gravity alone. This makes it easy to pull the front seat cushion up to access the tray underneath. Folks usually kept their tools and jack under there.

Sounds a lot like the back seat of a tudor, simply used in the sport couple...

Sounds like my lower is correct and complete. But what stops the seat from taking off backwards when the massive 4cyl spins up? Or my fat ass shifts around? Does the rear cushion prevent the front from moving? Anyone have pics of the rear bracket the back drops into?

The seat back riser has tabs that prevent both cushions from moving to the rear. The lower cushion helps to maintain the position of the seat back and the big tabs that fit into the package tray cross brace bo the rest.. I've never noticed a lot of movement in my seat components.

It's approximately a 2" X 2" wood member that is mounted under the front of the metal package tray and matches the width of the tray. It is set up so that it can be placed two ways. The slots in the wood member will work in front of the tray or just under the front of the tray since slots are also punched into the metal package tray to align with the slots in the wood member. This allows for some adjustment of the seat back fore & aft but not a lot. my car had it mounted in front of the package tray.

Ford heavily marketed these cars as a mother/daughter car for around town use. For tall men, the rear most mounting may be better. I think there is a service bulletin that mentions adjustment of this member. Most folks that have driven a roadster notice pretty quick how limited the room is in one. The coupes had more room and wider doors so they were a relatively comfortable car for most folks. They are definitely easier to get in and out of.

Here is a link to the service bulletin in 1928. Later cars were made a bit different to allow for easier adjustment but not by much.

Does anyone have a pic of their member? 😆
I'll try to post a pic of what I have currently. Which is a home made barnwood roof.

After it is covered with fabric, it's not possible to take a photo. Parts sources that supply body and top wood may have photos of the wood pieces.

You might check B-Terry's web site. He has photos of a business coupe with new wood installed. He also has a post somewhere on here that has photos of a sport coup with new wood but the package tray wood isn't among those photos.

Here is a link to Bert's:

It's the piece at the very top.
