1955 ford fairlane town sedan transmission kickdown rod.
My engine is being rebuilt, it is the original 272 yblock with original fordomatic transmission, when i bought it , it did not have a kickdown rod and the shop i have it at said they can make one by hand for about 1,000.00 , does this seem fair or are they milking me ?

You know that it is a TV (Throttle Valve) ROD and the trans will not operate if missing or not adjusted correctly? I'll be back ... OK ... I'm Back - You need FORD PN B5AZ 7A187-B. It fits a 1955-57 FORD 272-292-2V FM. Last edited by KULTULZ; 03-05-2022 at 02:31 PM. |

Were you driving the car before taking it in?

$1000? And you didn't tell them to go pound sand?
You should be able to buy one on e-pay at a more reasonable price (but I've passed up a lot of nasty junk on epay due to the exhorbitant prices). If worst comes to worst, go to the hardware store and buy a piece of threaded rod, bend it to fit and modify the bottom end to go in the transmission kickdown lever. Drill a hole at bottom for cotter pin. Make your own passing gear clevis for the top of the rod to fit in the bellcrank pin. Whatever you do, don't drive the car without the kickdown rod. |

Is the 4000.00 for an engine rebuild or exchange engine? Does the trans need overhauling? |

I don't know how close it would be, but the Tbird suppliers have kick down rods and the clevis.

That rod completely controls the hydraulics on that style trans. It has to be adjusted (final) with a pressure gauge to allow the trans to operate properly. Is this shop aware of this?

Re: 1955 ford fairlane town sedan transmission kickdown rod.
It will be necessary for whoever is responsible for adjusting the kickdown rod to obtain the Fordomatic Shop Manual (either 55/56 will do). The procedure is not located in the Ford Car Shop Manual. It is a separate repair manual.
If you do not have one, you should get one or borrow access to one. It lists different procedures for the linkages on 2-bbl, 4-bbl V8's and 1-bbl I-block 6's. Make sure you pick the right procedure for your application. Using this manual, you can do it yourself if you are so inclined. |

I have the Paul Marsch Fordomatic Service manual on CD. Would that be it?

Re: 1955 ford fairlane town sedan transmission kickdown rod.
Putting the giant posts on here is a PITA.
The TV control is more than a kick down. It is what controls the pressure in the transmission. The 55 model may not be the only year that used that rod. The part should be out there. A cable is fine for an AOD type Trans but may not be as usable for the FOM trans. Ford didn't use the vacuum modulator till 1961 or so. The linkage bell crank and rod did the job in the early FOM and cruise-o-matic units. Last edited by rotorwrench; 03-12-2022 at 10:47 AM. |
