Coachlace Trim for Early A (AR),hubcaps and Bell housing
Hi:
I have a Canadian A from Early 1928(June). It has a 1 3/4 Coachlace trim running along the top of the door and side panels.Does anyone know where I might get this made? It is apparently weaved originaly and carried over from the horse and carriage days. I also would like to obtain hubcaps with the Ford script and stamped Made in Canada.Maybe some NOS out there . The other thing I'd like is a complete Bell housing with pedals and shift fork close to Atlantic Canadian to reduce shipping. |

I have an interior upholstery kit with lace from Classtique in Minnesota for my Tudor. You can call Elizabeth to see if she will sell just the lace seperately. 763-439-4441
LeBarron Bonney might also sell you some lace. Chance of getting the original pattern is zero from anyone though. Here is the original June 1928 Tudor lace on one of our club member's car. |

Re: Coachlace Trim for Early A (AR),hubcaps and Bell housing
Your Tudor would not have ''Made in Canada'' hubcaps by mid '28, even though being Canadian.
Only the very first Canadian cars had this, maybe the first couple of months production [Feb. March '28] ; presume it has the early single brake system? The excellent photos from Tom are interesting. I notice the handle is not correct, it being a '''deluxe'' repro ; nearly all Tudors & Coupes end up with these put on as the plain style originals are pot metal & break over time & use. Nice original interior however. Last edited by Tudortomnz; 03-03-2014 at 05:07 PM. |

Here's a picture of my Classtique Tudor upholstery kit. This kit is at least 20 to 30 years old, so the lace now used is probably not the same design.

That is simple windlace covering, the same as LB uses. I fact it's LB's windlace material.

This is what I was told by one other gentleman but I don't see any windlace in LB that is even close to the pattern I have.

Tom these are the closest photos to my interior. The light stripes in the original coachlace have brown squares inside them I assume? The panels also look like they are striped which mine are as well. I'm going to try my darndest to get as close to the original coachlace made somewhere as it's quite nice.

Re: Coachlace Trim for Early A (AR),hubcaps and Bell housing
There is/was a lady up in the Northeast that had a small loom that was making it on a custom order. I am thinking I spoke to Bill Sturm about her a year or so ago, and I cannot remember if he said she was not doing it any longer but THAT is who I would start by asking.

Thanks I had spoken to Bill a few months ago and he was going to try and find out if she was still doing custom work.

Re: Coachlace Trim for Early A (AR),hubcaps and Bell housing
My wife is a weaver, I showed her Tom's pictures and she said it could be an Inkle Band made on an Inkle loom which is a very small narrow lap top size loom. She thinks that if someone could talk to the "lady from the northeast" and find out what she is using for thread, and the pattern used, there are many women (and men) around the country who would probably be very willing to take this on. If she can't be contacted it would help to have a good sample and some of the expert weavers that are around could break it down and replicate it.

Re: Coachlace Trim for Early A (AR),hubcaps and Bell housing
I do have a 2x2 sample and this is what I was told locally that the sample would have to be taken apart by someone who may be able to do this.
Problem is I don't have anyone locally who can actually do it but are trying to find a good contact. I will contact Bill again and see if he can get the name of the lady from the Northeast. |

Re: Coachlace Trim for Early A (AR),hubcaps and Bell housing
Sounds like thistlehillweavers.com can make anything you want. They have some of Henry Ford loms for reproducing. I can't believe LB hasn't hooked up with them.Yes it is expensive but one of the most visible areas of the car so why not make it original looking?
The ladies name is Rabbit Goody and I've sent my sample to her for reproduction but I'm waiting for the exchange rate CDN - USD to improve before I give the go ahead. May be waiting awhile |

Re: Coachlace Trim for Early A (AR),hubcaps and Bell housing
Marjie Thompson in Maine did these for me. the coach lace is different than the windlace. the second pics are of original wind and coachlace. the black arrows show the portions with out sun damage. the red arrows with. The 'brown' parts are actually blue and light blue.

Re: Coachlace Trim for Early A (AR),hubcaps and Bell housing
This is the Canadian AR hubcap that you will need. Notice the ford script. Under the script is a star symbol. That is what was used on the Canadian cars, as the US cars had made in USA stamped on theirs. My father in law searched for more then 20 years for these caps. We have a complete set now. They are nickle plated, not chrome. Hope this helps. Did you find a bell housing yet? Jeff

Re: Coachlace Trim for Early A (AR),hubcaps and Bell housing
Attached are coachlace photos I FINALLY had weaved this past summer (2021) from SMS Auto Fabrics in Oregon. It took a lot of pushing to get it done but happy with the result. I can't think of any reason why the upholstery companies can't at least make a stamped version of this .

Re: Coachlace Trim for Early A (AR),hubcaps and Bell housing
Oh ... and here are my door panels with the coachlace installed for my June 1928 Tudor (Canadian) .As close to my originals as I can get. My car came with two map pockets as well contrary to what the judging guidelines state. My car with the left E Brake also has the fender aprons over the top of the frame contrary to the judging guidelines. I've also enclosed photos of my seats and carpet for interest sake. I hope to finally have the car on the road this Spring !
