Carb Issue. Driving me nuts.

Just got the 40 on the road. It has the correct 85 hp engine along with the 99 carb. I noticed that it hesitated a bit when shifting gears just for a second and when I would hit the gas from idle it was a little rough (not bad – just not perfect). I thought it may be the power valve so I replaced it with a NOS one. Installed it and it was the same. I had a new replacement and put that in and still not change.
I had a factory rebuilt carb (in the box and never used) and put that on. No hesitation very smooth however, it would not idle correct. I messed with the idle air screws and just could not get it to idle. (The one screw on the pass side made no difference if it was all the closed or all the way out.)
I put the old one back on because I can at least drive the car. Once in gear there’s no hesitation and runs fine it’s just that first second shifting into gear that it bogs down.
I thought that it may be my distributor vacuum brake but I ruled that out tonight with the switching of carbs. Still can’t get it to ping though.
Any ideas on the carb issue??

Yes, use the base of the one that will idle on the top and middle of the one that runs good, and see what happens.

If you have a sloppy fit of the accel pump link to the throttle it will cause something like that or wrong AP or too high a # PV. you need a #5.5 in there. ken ct.

The accel pump link might be in the wrong location or the leather worn to nothing. Either way your problem sounds like it is connected to the lack of fuel during the first instant of butterfly opening.

On the idle problem, check the little holes in the base throttle bores. These should be cleaned out with carb. cleaner and small wires. Lots of compressed air. I seem to remember there are three holes, at least on the Ford/chandler groves, with the middle one being a transition between idle and power circuits. Something is plugged in that area somewhere.

I said the heck with it. I pulled another rebuilt carb out of the box and put that on. Runs like new.
It's nice to have spares. I bought 6 Ford rebuilt carbs in 1979 and they are coming in handy.

personally i think your going to have trouble with those 30 yr old power valves in them and or rubber tipped needles and possible rubber type acce. pumps. This corn gas dont like any rubber products. OMO good luck. ken ct.

Your right. I'm sure I will. Didn't think about that. I'll see how long this one lasts. I most likely will be contacting you for the kits. I'll get a production line going and do them all at once

Green Gas is killing us.

What's the balance between the "savings" to the environment vs. the additional crap thrown into landfills due to the green gas?

In the final accounting, it takes more energy to produce a gallon of Corn gas than there is energy in that gallon of fuel! This along with lower power output and fuel economy when running it compounded with all the damage it causes in our cars really makes perfect sense to me????????

Don't you get it they don't care about the cars. It's better for them if our cars would be crushed because our cars are "harmful to Mother Earth". Don't get me started with these clowns in D.C.

The cost per gal. of corn fuel is about $24.00. The government gives tax dollars to farmers to grow the corn, the goverment gives tax dollars to the process plants and the increase in food costs make this an expensive fuel. We would be more efficient to burn the propane directly in the cars instead of using it to fertilize the corn. Every time energy is transformed you only get 20% at best. Large coal fired power plants are real efficient and they only have 20% efficiency. They use .75 lbs. of coal to produce a kw. The line losses, transformer losses and battery losses make electric cars a joke. The coal used to produce a kw at the rear wheels is about 6lbs. of coal. These electric cars are not green like everybody wants you to think.

I think some of the trouble is this really extra heavy oxygen less summer humid air, makes the old girls run real rich. It's doing me no good either, can't wait for a nice brisk 80 degree day.

Hay, At least you didn't get a rebuild from Vintage Speed. I DID and have had nothing but problems with that guy, I am new to flatheads and got burnt!! I didn't mean to hijack your post but am a little frustrated.

You have taught me something. Our old cars are a lot like us. On a hot, humid summer day I have to force myself to do something outside. As a private pilot I know an airplane performs much better on a cold, crisp day. I am 74 and never smoked a cigarette in my life, yet I am miserable when the temp gets over 90 degrees with high humidity. I force my self to go outside. Like you say, it could be the lack of oxygen in the air, just never thought of it that way.
