Further to "box wrench" we call hexagonal tube wrenches "box spanners", or some times "tube spanners" because they are made from formed seamless tubing. But tube spanners can also be those open ended spanners used on brake lines etc. So "box spanner" is preferred and quite different from "box wrench"

Open end spanners are flare wrenches.

Open or box end , depending on whether the wrench is open or box- closed ended .

It is becoming clear to me that terminology varies very much from place to place. How do all these variations start?
Spanner comes from the German language (Spannen) and dates from the 1700s. Wrench???

Here ya go... Flare Nut Wrench, Box End Wrench, Open End Wrench, Box End Ratcheting Wrench, Open End Ratcheting Wrench.

I would be curious to know what our friends down under call these?

We call an attractive girl a spanner - because the sight of her tightens our nuts (but never in her presence!)
