S10 5 speed is a popular swap. Do a search on here or google. Tons of info out there.

A 9 inch rear end from a 57-72 Ford 1/2 ton pickup is a direct bolt in. Find one with 3.00 to 3.50 gears. Wheel bolt pattern is the same also. I've done several this way.

Edit; I am assuming you have an F-1....same info applies for F-2, F- 3....just use a 3/4 ton rear instead.

like rmr&c said, swapping the rear end to a nine inch
is the easiest way, with the right gear ratio. you can
even, with a little modifacation, use a modern 8.8,
thats what I have under my 48 f1, came out of a
2002 exploria, but I have a 302 with a aod, trans.

Would this also work on a 51 F1?

Yes. 48-52 are the same chassis. The rear end swap also works for 53-56 trucks.

An old friend did a 53 F100 rebuild & installed an OD trans from an 86 F100. He did a little messing around with the clutch & since it was a top loadeer looked close to stock, just a different looking shift lever. It liked the highway a lot more after that.

If it has the 4.27 :1 rear gears, you can go to the 3.73:1 rear gears if you can find some or 3.92:1 gears out of a 49 or 50 Mercury car will work. This would help some anyway. Using an overdrive transmision would help even more.

It just depends on whether you want the original Dana 41 rear axle or a later 9".

All transmission swaps involve cutting the cross member. I recommend swapping the rear axle.

I have a 51 F3 Duallie, what rear end would you guys recommend, maybe a direct bolt in?
Also looking for a Ford Scrip long bed to replace the wood bed the original farmer installed. Any ideas where to find one? Thanks

I changed the 4.27 in my 49 6 cylinder to a 3.73 out of a 56 F-100 with automatic. Bolts in, very satisfactory arrangement. I think the 48-50 (maybe later) gear options were 4.27 and 3.73 so some stock 3.73 gears are still around.

For the 51 F-3 you can use the Dana 60 axle from a 65-72 F-250. Make sure to get one with either the 4.10 or 3.54 ratio, depending on how fast you want to drive.
