I did a little "Googling", and I see I even got the name wrong. It is "Judson Electronic Magneto. I also found this data sheet. From the looks of it, and the fact they they say you have to retain the condenser tells me that this is just a fancy coil. I guess this Judson was popular for high performance parts for VW's.

Looks cool, though.
