B5 indicates that to be designed during the 1955 model year. It was likely the last of the 6-volt types. 1956 is when they went to 12-volts. The amperage rating is important too. Most of the old 3-pole type were 33 amp max.
Just to add: I looked and the Echlin Catalog and they list the VR401 as the replacement for a lot of the 3-pole 6-volt system regulators that Ford and some other manufacturers can use. Echlin used to be a good quality outfit but I can't vouch for them since they were bought out by Standard Motor Parts. The VR401 uses light blue for the cover.
