Was that a conversion, or were they made that way from the factory?

These were made here in New Zealand by Standard Motor Bodies who were a subsidiary of the Colonial Motor Company. Colonial Motor Company were the Ford importers for New Zealand until 1936 when the Ford Motor Company built its own assembly plant.
