I have a chance to buy a 1940 Merc with a Ford motor of some sort.. What is this ?

I think it is supposed to say "WHAT MOTOR IS THIS?"
A photo would be helpful.

An original car with no modifications will have the 99A 239 CID 95 horse power Ford L-head V8 other wise called a flathead V8. If it has valve covers on it or is a later flathead V8, then we would need to see a photo.
