I have just acquired some Champion No. 20 spark plugs. Without an extremely close examination they appear to be suitable for a Model A. They are two-piece, but do not have a copper top. Can anyone offer some insight?

Is it a Champion W20? If so, it is a bit hotter than a stock Champion 3X. Works OK on a Model A. A bit hotter than a W18.

I have 6 new ones here, if anyone would like to run them in their engine. You can have them for $5 each + postage (~$6.50).

No - just 20. Only have two ribs at the top - the rest is smooth. Not like the W14 I have which has ribs all down the insulator except where the numbers are.

I see an I-H-C logo, that is International Harvester Co. Plugs for the old farm tractor guys. I don't know how the heat range would compare for Model A use... but suggest might be in BIG demand for them with the old tractor restoration crowd.

Do you have these in new undamaged condition in their original boxes?

Sorry - no. They are used in a bag with others. Insulators appear stained although I haven't tried to clean them. Points look almost new. Nice and clean in the combustion area. And I only have three!! Very much like your pics.

To clean the stain from the insulator material soak the plugs in Oxalic Acid (wood bleach) available at any hardware store. Will clean off any rust and doesn't affect the steel or printing.
Works very well.

I checked my Feb. 1936, Champion Spark Plug Service Type Selector for Passenger Cars. And no number 20 plugs are listed. The #20 plugs must be for commercial, farm or industrial use.

Model A spark plugs have a longer reach which puts the electrodes down into the combustion chamber.

The # 20 plugs as you have shown have shorter reach that puts the electrodes up higher and may be even into the threaded part of the spark plug hole.

I would stay with a plug with longer reach that designed to fit the Model A head.
