Not everybody knows about the Brass '30-'31 Dash.

I bought a very nice Brass Dash, very straight with original worn plating for $10.00 last year at the L.A. Roadsters Fathers Day Swap Meet. It was in the afternoon on Saturday. People had looked at this guys stuff for 2 days and no one bought it. I just happened along and found it in plain sight just laying on the ground amoung his other stuff. Non of the people I was with even knew such a thing existed.

Deals are still out there if you look.

Chris.

Is it true the brass dashes went on open cars since they were exposed to the eliments more than a closed car? True or false please keep passing this story around. Took me over 2 years to get $50.00 for one that needed to be replated.

I have aquired 2 of the brass jobs over the years and I know I've never paid over $10 for any panel I've had. Guess I'll be watching for more at that price if I can get $20 out of them.

5window asked to see what a brass dash looks like
everyone I've ever seen did not have a recessed ring around the horizontal recessed ridges look carefully at the two NOS instrument panels
the brass one is on the right,
with out the recessed outer ring
Also all the brass one have a "B" stamped into the steel mounting bracket for the speedometer

I think the "B" is a manufacturer logo. Why would a manufacturer stamp "B" for brass on something they made in brass that looks like brass before plating??

Well Bob C. $85.00 for a really nice one. And i delivered it for "Free" ..Went to a good cause.. Mid 1930 Deluxe Phaeton under restoration... Owner had a panel plated with a line around the ribs[later panel for his car].. hoops wrong panel but a very nice plating job.

Ok this has stirred up some controversy
First I am not an expert on brass dashes
But EVERY one ive seen has had "B" stamped on the speedometer bezel
e in addition to the "B" some have Scovill stamped on the opposite side
I have not seen any with JUST Scovill ,but do not doubt that they may exist
I checked a bunch of panels without the "B" and NONE were brass

heres a sampling of 11 BRASS panels
4 have both Scovill ,and "B" stamped on them,
7 have just the "B" stamped on them
none were unmarked
looking at my STEEL dashes,a few have Scovill and the rest were unmarked
So,Scovill made both steel and brass dashes
every brass dash I have has a "B" on it
In addition one NOS Brass dash is Nickel plated, not chrome

The the Scovill Manufacturing Company in Waterbury, CT made the brass dashes. They had a Brass Works division which is probably where the dashes were made. So why would a brass works company stamp a "B" on a brass stamping? Is the the steel mounting bracket for the speedometer different on the brass and metal dashes? I would think the "B" stamp and Scovill logo would have been stamped prior to assembly with the dash panel? They are still in business in GA. http://www.scovill.com/html/Scovill_About_Us.html

Maybe the gage thickness was different between the steel panels and brass ones so the steel speedo bracket had to be made to different specs for where it was swaged onto each panel. They would have annotated the ones slated for the brass panels so batch confusion wouldn't happen.
Just a theory. lol
