It is lubricated by oil spilling out the front of the valve chamber on the side of the engine and falling down on the gears.
If the fan belt is connected, temporarily disconnect it and see if the noise is still there. The noise might be from the water pump or generator/alternator turning. Does the pitch of the sound change with RPM? If so, you might be hearing the steel gear teeth contacting the aluminum gear teeth. Ford used a fiber gear to reduce noise. .
