Antisqueak pad for springs
Hi, the Pilot V8 Woodie has a greased fabric pad between the top leaf and the cross member on both the front and rear springs. Has anyone any suggestions about what to renew them with?

Re: Antisqueak pad for springs
I used a piece of .090 in. thick aluminum sheet metal 40 years ago and it still works fine.
It doesn't absorb water, doesn't squeak and doesn't rot away. metal from an old STOP sign would work nicely as that aluminum is made to resist corrosion. You can't even see it. Car is 40 Ford. Last edited by 19Fordy; 06-23-2018 at 08:43 AM. |

If you are wanting to use the webbed type pads do not put grease on them. Ford used a spring lubricant. A modern option is SlipPlate.

Re: Antisqueak pad for springs
I've used frame webbing also and greased it well. Usually you have a bit left over and I don't throw much out. Probably pretty close to what was there. No squeaks.
Used a aluminum plate to take up slack on modern repo springs or when removing leafs to lower. But usually on the bottom. |

Re: Antisqueak pad for springs
JSeery has the right idea to me.
When I did my 39 coupe in 1991, I ground off the spring depressions caused by wear, used the Slip-Plate, and reassembled the springs. I did the same to my 32 Tudor., eight years ago No squeaks after all these years, & the springs are very compliant. The aluminum may also be a good idea, but not sure how it's adhered. Jim |
