Is this 8BA Salvageable?

Hi, I was taking apart this 8BA today and came across a very large crack is this salvageable? Thanks I hope the picture works

Check down about 2" above the pan rail, on the side of the block. I bet it's cracked all along there too.

Saw this same cracked block posted on Facebook earlier tonight with this same question. The responses went about 50/50 on scrap vs. fix.

That's some pretty nasty cracking going on there. Anything is fixable, but at what cost? Probably way more than finding another block,...just sayin'

I’m sure it’s repairable, but how much would it cost VS finding another good block?

I never scrap any of my “bad” blocks, there will come a day when they are scarce enough to fix. And if nothing else they are good for mock up work.

Most definitely. Common problem in Minnesota back in the flathead days! We often had a leak of some kind in our older cars so ran water in the summer and would forget to add antifreeze in the fall. A sudden hard freeze in late Sept. or early October and it was all over!

Another fine use for a shot flathead block. There’s a fellow in fairbanks that made one with the mail going inside the block.

That's one expensive and heavy mailbox, but if anyone hits it, they will pay the price.

I don't believe that it would be worth the cost to repair. There are probably more yet unseen issues that you will discover with a pressure test. As Walt said, there are lots of these blocks out there.

I'm getting ready to relieve a block which I've never done before. I was thinking your block would be perfect to practice on, no emotional attachment and no having to go to therapy if you screw it up.
