Default 28 mis fire

1928 Phaeton. I have a carby backfire issue. Have timed motor from TDC just put kit through 97 stromberg. I have good spark and fuel. Any body had similar issues? Could it be head gasket? I am a newbie as I inherited this beautiful car recently. It has a counter weight advance on distributed and apparently an upgraded coil.

Are you using a fuel pump with your 97? The engine will idle and run slowly without a pump but will need a fuel pump for full power. All you need is 1 1/2 to 2 lbs. pressure.

Check the fuel level in the carb. Main jets should be #45, idle screws should be all the way in, then out 1 - one and a half turns, adjust again with warm engine.
