Let me know if it works out, I'm considering the same thing. Their normal position is a pretty tight fit between the frame sections and I have to pull mine out anyway to re-fit them to the new outlet pipes from the exhaust manifolds.
I saw a comment (somewhere) that straight pipes weren't as loud as they'd thought.
