I need to know which side of the replacement seal faces towards the transmission - A or B? The last photo is of the OEM seal that had the #4245 leather seal. I did a search and found that "the "lip" of the replacement seal faces the transmission". Does this refer to the 1/8 inch wide tapered lip on side B or the smaller tapered lip on side A? I want to get it correct as pulling the torque tube is a lot of work for my aching back. Thanks, JIM

The perceived wisdom from this site states that side A should go towards the transmission. You have to imagine it keeping the grease in the UJ cavity rather than the oil in the torque tube.
Just to double check, side A is the side with the spring around the rubber part?? Yes? I replaced mine before I read this information on this site, and fitted it the other way around, as my problem was trying to keep the oil in the torque tube and not migrating forward into the transmission. So I suppose I have lead myself to the following: If a stocker, position it to keep the grease in the UJ. if a lowered hot rod running a rake, put it the other way round, to keep the oil in the torque tube. In real terms I don't suppose it is hyper critical. Fwiw the same applies for the axle seals, they are supposed to keep the grease in the hubs rather than oil in the axle. Both ends are counter intuitive to what you might at first expect. Mart. |
