tranny noise

I'm flogging my '39 peeekup. The tranny is noisy on third gear and the uni area gives off a clank in motion. Our work party has the rear end out and I have cleaned the uni. It is loose but I would not consider it shot. I will replace it. 3 of the four knob ends are shiny showing scuffing on the ball interior through abut 1/4 of the way around. The uni bolt was a bit loose and front-to-back play in the tranny end shaft is 1/16."
We open the rear end tomorrow.

take cover off trans and see if you can move the gears back and forth on the cluster and also check clearance on 2nd gear thrust washer

Did you check the bearing that controls the drive shaft - just wondering if it is shot and if the shaft is 'flopping around'.

If worn out, that drive shaft stabilizer bearing can make noises. You can check the torque tube front bearing & seal out too. New bearings are available if you find something there. The coupler in the back can have problems too and the noise travels up the torque tube so it's hard to tell where it's coming from.

With the U-joint bolt being loose, and finding any movement of the U-joint front to rear as a result, I'd think that could easily allow the U-joint to move far enough rearward to rub on the inside of the torque tube bell. DD

The loose was loose. The aft shaft from the tranny was very loose. Tranny is a a'35. Currently on the floor as we grab clutch shaft to put into a 39 that I have.

Not sure on a 35, but when you put a 39 box in a stock 32, you have to modify the sheet-metal transmission cover to fit around the front of the 39 shift tower. You may not have this issue on a 35.

Clem, while you have things apart, you might as well check everything from transmission on back, splines, bearings, seals, etc. Get that peekup in good running condition before Chantilly in June!
This problem was most likely caused by hauling all those women's in the back for soooo many years

For a while the screeching kept them womens at bay. We are rebuilding a nice 37 box with 39 gears. The drive shaft seems pretty tight.

That's the way to go Clem. A member of your V8 Club Regional Group gave me the name of a guy in Va. who does good work on rebuilding early Ford transmissions. Maybe he is the same guy who is rebuilding yours?
