Motor Serial Identification
Hi,
I was wondering if someone could help me out with finding the year of my motor. I have is a 28 2 door sedan I have been working on and I was wondering if I had the correct motor for the car or if it has been changed over the years. well I cleaned up the area where the stamp should be above the water inlet and it has the number 4288164 but there is no stars at the front or end of the serial number and the first 4 of the serial is hard to see and off to the side. One more thing that makes me question the motor there is a tag on the block near the oil fill with numbers all over it according to what I have read that should not be there. I have a late 30’s model motor sitting around and it does not have that tag. I have attached pictures of both tag and stamp please take a look. Thanks for your time and any info is appreciated. |

Re: Motor Serial Identification
The first # you have is a Jan. 1931 eng #. The other ones are most likely enng. rebuild dates from over the years. That first # , I didn't see the stars, maybe a restamp when the engine was switched.

Re: Motor Serial Identification
Here is the link to the table for serial numbers to manufacture date.
4288164 is a January 21 1931 assembly date, but the stars are missing. http://plucks329s.org/pdf/studies/Mo...n%20Charts.pdf

Re: Motor Serial Identification
You have a re-stamp.
The charters are incorrect and there is no "A" prefix or "Stars". You can also see where the old numbers have been ground off. This is not uncommon. Chris W. |

Re: Motor Serial Identification
To add to what Chris said, the motors also never came with an additional tag on the block.
