Question Rope seal

Do you have to drop the oil pan to change the front rope seal or can you get to it by removing the timing gear cover only?

Rope seal is in (2) pieces, one in timing cover, other in oil pan.

Remove timing cover to replace top half; remove oil pan to replace bottom half .

It is possible to do it with the timing cover and the pulley remover but it hard to pack it in to the sump groove tightly enough while the crankshaft still there
can be done just takes time

Thanks for the reply. I would rather not remove the pan since the leak is only in the front at the crank.

OK guys - -don't shoot me - -this is just my opinion

It's easier to drop the pan and do it right.

I'd bet I'd be done before you got the old one out.

Again,, just my opinion.

Hi Big D,

Not trying to be funny, but in agreeing with the sincere advice in response #5 ...... you can also wipe yourself "with" your tuxedo on ..... it just takes far more time.

Then later when you get back to the reception, and get down to reality, removing your tux trousers would have taken far less time and would appear to have made as much sense as removing your oil pan to do it correctly.

Comparisons sometimes helps one to think differently and make different decisions.

Hope this helps.

Just pull the pan and do it right. That way you will only have to do it once. It really is not that hard to do.

You may be able to do it by loosening all the pan bolts and just dropping the front of the pan, but then, if you're going that far you may as well just take the pan right off.
Don't forget to soak the new seals in oil for an hour or more before installing them.
