6 volt generator

Was thinking of switching my 1950 f1 8ba, from 6 volt to 12volt. Was told you can keep the 6 volt generator and update it to a 12 volt.

Has anyone done this before.. I'm sure someone has. opinions? good idea/bad idea?

done it a few times...have to change the field coils and of course regulator bulbs etc...works ok but I think it reduces the peak output amperge. really no reason to unless u have a high compression engine.

6 volt generators can be converted to 12 volts, but the output amperage goes down. Depending on what you are wanting to do with it that may not be a big issue. You can also have the 6 volt generator converted to a 12 volt alternator.

What are the reasons for "thinking about switching to 12 volts"??

Good idea! I changed my 36 pickup to 12 volt. one way is to get a 56 or later 12 volt generator and put your front end frame and pulley on it.

Another way is to use a 12 volt regulator with your 6 volt generator and it will put out 12 volts but not as much amperage.

Either way you'll need a 12 volt regulator, but I prefer the 12 volt generator.

Changes required:
gen/alt, regulator, all bulbs, voltage converter for most guages, and battery

Always seemed easier to simply keep the 6V system in good order - that's just me.

the wire harness is puke. so I thought why not change it all out,

Thanks for the reply s. I'm gonna see if some local folks will change the old 6 volt gen to a 12 volt alternator, using the same housing.

I put a GM 6v alternator in my '40 about 3 years ago and it works great. Bolts right up and has a one wire connector. No more voltage regular and a lot of wiring gone !
