Body rivets
I am about to rerivet on my '27 coupe body. I am reinstalling the rain gutters & T strips back on to the body, among many other parts back on.
I understand that the original rivets were squeezed into place. What I need to know is, which way has someone done their body riveting, when they replaced rivets. I'm not building a judged car, just want to get my rivets in right, and to hold tight. I am using 3/16 dia x 1/2 long rivets. I can not get the air hammer to the back side to rivet them. Do put the rivet in from the outside, and hammer the rivets on the head, with the buck behind, to flatten the end. Or, do I put the rivet in from inside, and hammer the end of the rivet to flatten (shape) it, with the buck on the head of the rivet, behind. Also, do I need to heat the end of each rivet, just before hammering it. Thanks, Pat |

Hasn't anyone ever replace a body rivet? I just want to know how you went about doing it.

This page has a decent description of how to replace rivets. It's a Land Rover forum, but a rivet is a rivet. For small body rivets you shouldn't need heat. The Rivet should extend through the material 1 and 1/2 times the rivet diameter. Proper rivet length is important . |

Everything I read is the same as this, but they are installing aluminum rivets. The ones used on T's are steel. and thats what I using. Tahnks, Pat |
