Default Is there a good way to check a Model A rear end?

I recently acquired my third Model A. A 1930 CCPU and am in the process of taking it apart.. To a point.

My question is: Is there a good way to determine if the parts in the rear end are still good without a major disassembly?

Thank guys. New Barner here!

You can split it and just remove one side without too much hassle, that will give you a pretty good idea. You will need a spring spreader though.

Be sure to keep track of the thickness of the paper gaskets between the axle housing and the center section. They are shims used to adjust he rear end. If everything looks ok put it back together with the same thickness paper gaskets.

I've always found that draining and examining the lube plus a good inspection of the inside of the banjo with a borescope will give me a pretty accurate feel for the overall condition of a rear end. (overall smell, slickness and drag a magnet through the lube) Add a peek behind the drums and I hit my comfort/discomfort decision. If something doesn't seem/look right ....THEN I dig in deeper.

one idea:

If you find the Diff in the yard with the driveshaft up in air with no Coffee can covering it up ... just forget that one as the "pumpkin' will be full of water and rusted inside.

Me too. If there are no obvious issues with it I'd leave it alone.

I jack up one rear wheel and rotate it back and forth (clunk-clunk)to determine how loose it is... to get an idea of wear on internal parts,if its tight its OK if its not howling ..if its real loose then it is suspect, like my roadster is.

Mine howls at 27 mph. Thank God as I use it to determine if my speedometer reads under or over. I keep forgetting.
After I recalibrate what's left of this old mind, I stop driving 27 mph. I apply Bill W. logic to life aka Buster dog logic, eat a lot, be loved, be petted, sleep a lot and dream of a leash free world.
