Use a good oil.

There are varied opinions on what grade of oil and if there should be detergent in the oil and if there should be zinc additive in the oil. Some say when it was new the oil recommended by Ford was 30 Wt non-detergent so that is what you should use. Some say do not use detergent oil because it will dissolve any sludge build up in the engine and destroy the engine. Some say use an oil with zinc because it will prevent the camshaft from wearing out real fast.

I say use a good grade multi wt detergent oil. Zinc additive is not needed, detergent will not dissolve existing sludge.

WE need more info! Has the car been running detergent or non-detergent in the past? Is this a new car to you and the first time you have changed the oil ? What did the previous owner Use for oil? If it has been running on non-detergent and you want to switch to detergent, have you cleaned out the dipper tray in the oil pan and the bottom of the pan? Also a good idea to clean out the valley behind the valve cover. You are going to get every kind of oil made today as THE only oil to use. It is your choice and decision as which one to use. Good luck with this one!

Depends if you have white walls. Also need to know if you use anti freeze or water.

I use one part detergent, one part non detergent, one part ZDDP, one part Marvel Mystery Oil, one part STP, and one part used Rotella from my truck.

Suits everyone! :-) :-) :-)

I always thought it depended on whether you still had a generator or have an alternator. Now I'm confused

Actually, I use Chevron 10W30, usually on sale at Costco. I'd probably use Rotella if I could find it in quarts at a descent price.

But as many have said, anything available now is better than what was available in the '30s

Ya we are not tiring to be bad. It is one of those things that there really is no answer that fits every one.

So just use depending on where you live. 5w-30 winter and 20w- 40 summer. If you live in a cool area then maybe 10w-30 or 10w-40 summer.

Hung out to dry...
BTW, re Racoons they use to get into the shop. We tried everything. They would pick the locks to get in....We switched to combination locks as we all know racoons aren't good with numbers.

Don't know what previous owner used. Pulled pan, inch of sludge on bottom, pulled a couple of bearings, they look surprisingly good. Crankcase pretty clean.
