Default Trying to Pump Grease Into Non-Zerc Fittings

I've got some pressed-in old style fittings (both straight nozzle and conical shaped). I have what I think is an adapter tip for the lube gun. When I attempt to pump in some grease - say into the brake actuating arms - I don't think I'm getting anything pumped in. There is of course nothing to snap onto.

I'd appreciate an education on this 'art'!
