Hello, I always have the disconnect switch on whatever is the ground side. On cars with electric clocks, I wire a 5 amp to the ground to keep the clock alive, clock itself is only a 3 amp and if anything should short out 5 amp should, hopefully blow.(1949 Buick )

If I remember correctly, I think for drag racing they require a different type of switch that also kills the ignition.
