Default 40 Sedan Transmission

I removed the column shifter 3 speed transmission from my 40 to install a 39 floor shift transmission. Does the 40 transmission have any value as far as resale.

Yes, more than you think. The gears will fit the 1939 box. And they're better than the 1932 to 1937 (ish) gears.
I would keep them as spares if you don't find a bunch of $ for it.

Thank Karl
I have sold the 40 and have this transmission leftover, that was my reason for asking. Might try selling it if it has any worth.

Any early Ford top shift case after 1936 or up to 1951 in pickups are a direct fit. A person needs the 91A shift fork for the pre 1939 transmissions. The 1932 through 35 can use some parts and may need modification for a shift fork.

Sold a set of very good innards for 39 trans for $100. I'd say easiest is to sell out the gears and chunk the case to save on postage. I'd give you $100 plus postage

I’d have to look at how much of a task it would be to disassemble the transmission.

Well, in that case, forget about it ‘cause you’d surely get grease under your fingernails.

Don’t really know how to take your comment so I’ll bite my tongue.

I, for one, think that transmission would be worth more as a complete unit rather than a pile of parts. It's a most likely a known good unit and probably cleaned up. Given the O/P's location, I would think the chance of a local (or regional) sale would be good.

In my opinion, the offer made was quite self-serving.

I paid $150 for one I used to convert a '39 box back in 1994. Otherwise, I would check eBay "Sold" listings.

If you can show pics of the gears with all their teeth, they should be worth $100 easy. If disassembled and you can show pics of all the important surfaces in great condition, double the price.

The side shift transmissions remained in production from 1940 through 1948 so there are likely folks looking for them. If gears are good with emphasis on the input & cluster set and first/reverse then it has a lot of value there. Those cases are rarer than top shift types. I'd figure minimum of $250 with more for good gears. Start high and let it ride till you decide to let it go for less. Shipping on stuff like that requires a crate so figure that in. It ain't cheap to ship stuff these days. Heavy stuff generally has to go less than a truck load truck freight. You might get lucky on Craigslist but you just never know. It always depends on local population numbers.
