Here's another picture of a rear bumper on a '35 that has the middle section with no bends either downward or inward. Maybe early ones were like this prior to the inward curved ones similar to the 36's (?).

With that "duck tail" under the door, I can see why they went to the recessed bumper in '36 that's gotta be about almost a 2 foot reach into the interior with the existing bumper.
