I've got a nice 3.54 ring and pinion set. Only trouble is the pinion spline has been seriously hammered. Should it be possible to build up weld on the worn faces of the spline and remachine it? Thanks!

I dont think so.

No expert on the subject by anymeans but welding and such would change the hardness of the pinion and make it brittle.

Unless its a gear set made of un-obtanium I'd just replace it.

Weld it with UTP 65 stick electrode. High nickel-chrome, 130,000 tensile, 40% elongation, free machining and work hardens just right...

Absolutely, any competent machine shop can do this.

3.54's are not quite unobtanium, but good originals are hard to find and can be pricey... definitely worth fixing.

I have tig welded them up and remachined.
This was for a street application and it is still running 15 years later.
I don't think I would consider doing it for a high horsepower car.
