Re: Heater cors
To add what Kube stated, a local radiator shop found almost an exact replacement of my '40s heater core in their parts catalog, requiring very minor work for a perfect fit.

Re: 1953 overdrive transmission interchange
The '49-'51 Fords are the same overall length, but differ in mounting as tubman stated.
The '49-'50 and early '51 Mercs are completely different with '32-'48 round pattern cases, but...

Re: Hydraulic Brakes went out!
I would first suggest changing your brake apply system from the pedal pulling through the marginally efficient linkage design to the normal direct/straight push operation of the master cylinder by...

Re: from Charlie Schwendler AKA Charlie NY
Very sorry to learn about Alice. Charlie had converted a Chevy distributor for my '51, and then I met and talked to both of them soon after at one of the V8 meets in Auburn. Alice went out of her...

Re: Measuring degrees of advance
The crank pulley dot/bump IS 2 degrees BTDC on ALL late F/M flatheads. I suggest procuring a '49-'51 Ford shop manual that will be very helpful if you are keeping your father's '51.

Re: Another spongy brake pedal
Having the rear brake assemblies upside down not only creates bleeding problems, but also positions the lines in harms way. NOT good. I would do what's necessary to position the brakes properly. ...

Re: Oil capacity clarification
Heard, a picture of your pan will help with capacity, but '49-'53 Ford center sump car pans hold 4 quarts, while the rear sump '49-'51 Merc and truck pans hold 5, so add one quart with the filter for...

Re: Jets & Power Valves
Use only genuine Stromberg parts. Jets and power valves should have numbers stamped on them.
What problems have you with "new" power valves?

Re: master cylinder
Master location has nothing to do with drum brake residuals. Guess I haven't explained the residual function well enough.

Re: master cylinder
Well, NOT so good video. I like Wilwood products, but their explanation of a drum residual is total BS!
Why in the hell would you want the shoes to float inside a drum, with only .020"-.030" or...

Re: master cylinder
Residual valves are required in older/vintage drum brakes to prevent air from entering past the wheel cylinder cups during fast release. Your stock '53 has one located at the end of the bore inside...

Re: master cylinder
If your brakes are original drums, you don't need a proportioning valve, but you will need a residual for each axle IF the new dual master does not have them located behind the tube seats.
