There is no rubber washer. The "piston stop" is a steel washer.

Ditto on what tubman offered. I'd also check your distributor advance, too much also makes hard starting.

I too would just use bar and chain or heavy oil. You could put a dollop of regular grease in the pickup tube to stop drain out of the oil you add. I wouldn't use STP.
